Doctors are eligible to reactivate their North Carolina medical licenses if, and only if, they have had a license in North Carolina and said license has been placed on inactive status within the past calendar year. However, if a license is inactive as a result of a disciplinary action (e.g., revocation, suspension, surrender), then a reinstatement application is required. Reasons for and dates of inactivation can be looked up on our Web site.
In order to reactivate your North Carolina medical license you are required to download and complete the reactivation application (forwarding the Board Action Data Bank Inquiry Form to the Federation of State Medical Boards), and pay the required fees (fees submitted are not refundable).
The reactivation of your license must be complete within one year of the inactive date to avoid having to submit more information. Your license will not be retroactive, but your license number will remain the same. However, if you would like to discuss other options you may meet with a subcommittee of the board after your application is complete.
Upon completion of your reactivation application and receipt of your fee, you will be advised whether an interview is required.
