Civil War. Raleigh physician Dr. Edmund Burke Haywood, one of the founders of the NC Medical Society and a member of the second Board of Medical Examiners, is given charge for the North Carolina Military Hospital, known as the Fairgrounds Hospital, and later Pettigrew Hospital.
