1996
The North Carolina Medical Board posts basic information, including name, license number, issue date and renewal date on the Web.
2000
Online licensee information is expanded to include all public disciplinary actions taken by the North Carolina Medical Board.
2006
The Board convenes a study committee with representation from patients’ rights groups, trial lawyers, the medical profession and the professional liability insurance industry to develop recommendations for expanding the public information available to patients and others about NCMB licensees.
2007
In January, the Board votes to adopt the recommendations of its study committee, which include posting certain information about malpractice/professional liability payments, felony convictions, certain misdemeanors, certain hospital privilege actions, and actions taken by out-of-state medical boards and other health regulatory agencies such as Medicare, Medicaid, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, etc. The Board approaches the N.C. General Assembly about changing state law to allow such information to be made public.
July 2007
The General Assembly passes a bill that authorizes and directs the Board to gather and make public certain information regarding its licensees. Information required under the law includes all five of the specific categories recommended by the Board’s study committee.
2008
The Board develops rules that specify how it will implement the new law, including criteria for the posting of malpractice/professional liability payments and certain misdemeanor convictions. Rules are adopted, but they are blocked by opponents, kicking the issue back to the General Assembly
August 2009
The General Assembly passes a bill that sets specific reporting criteria for malpractice/professional liability payments, clearing the way for the comprehensive expansion of the Board’s expanded Licensee Information pages.
December 2009
Expanded Licensee Information pages go live on the Board’s public website, www.ncmedboard.org
