NCMB President Janice E. Huff, MD, has established a task force to revisit the Board’s position statement on treating self, close family members and other loved ones. The task force will hold a public meeting at the NCMB’s offices in Raleigh on Tuesday, June 28, to discuss the position statement and consider possible changes. The meeting will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The existing position statement, entitled “Self-treatment and the treatment of family members and others with whom significant emotional relationships exist” was adopted in May 1991. It was last updated in September 2005. The position cautions against self treatment and the treatment of loved ones, except for minor, acute illnesses or in emergency situatations. The Board has found that many licensees are unaware of the position statement and others find it vague and confusing. The task force hopes to bring additional clarity to this challenging subject.
