Nursing Board policy change may affect employers of RNs, LPNs

Effective July 1, 2011, the NC Board of Nursing will not issue licenses to nurses who have not demonstrated compliance with Continuing Competence requirements at the time of license renewal/reinstatement, or to nurses who fail to submit evidence of compliance when audited.

Nurses who do not submit complete and accurate Continuing Competence documentation to the nursing Board by the end of their renewal month will have their licenses automatically placed on inactive status at midnight on the final day of the month. License inactivations take effect immediately. A nurse may not practice under any circumstances, in any nursing role, without an active license.

State law requires employers to verify that a registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse has an active license to practice nursing in North Carolina. The nurse may resume active practice as soon as the employer is able to verify an active license on the NCBON website by clicking Verify License or by calling the license verification telephone number, 919-881-2272.

To have a nursing license reinstated after inactivation due to noncompliance with Continuing Competence requirements, the nurse must submit acceptable documentation of compliance to the nursing Board. The review process may require up to five business days from receipt of the evidence by the nursing Board.
