Volunteer Applications for Physician Assistants

Please note: The application process will take roughly four months.

The NC Medical Board offers additional license applications to meet the different needs of physician assistants wishing to practice medicine in North Carolina.

Physician Assistant Limited Volunteer License

  • This application is for physician assistants (PA) who are not licensed in North Carolina but wish to volunteer at indigent clinics. A PA with a limited volunteer license can practice medicine in North Carolina for no more than 30 days per calendar year and may not receive compensation for services rendered at clinics specializing in the care of indigent patients.
  • This application is NOT appropriate for applicants who plan to perform any paid work as a physician assistant OR any PA who currently holds a full NC license and wishes to convert it to a volunteer license. To convert a full license, complete the “Conversion of Physician Assistant Full License to Physician Assistant Limited Volunteer License” Form.
