Faculty/Special Purpose Applications for Physicians

Please note: The application process will take roughly four months.

The Board offers additional license applications to meet the different needs of physicians wishing to practice medicine in North Carolina.

Physician Application for Medical School Faculty License (MSFL)

  • The MSFL license is intended to allow North Carolina medical schools to benefit from the expertise, specialized knowledge, or unique skills of physicians who are not otherwise eligible for full licensure in North Carolina. Please note: The term expertise does not apply to standard or routine knowledge that would be expected of any physician.
  • Physicians whose only credential is successful completion of a residency, fellowship, or other comparable training in the US or abroad. Please understand that the MSFL license should not be considered a means of alternative licensure for physicians who are otherwise not qualified for full licensure, and who do not possess true expertise, specialized knowledge, or unique skills. Again, standard or routine knowledge that would be expected of any senior resident or fellow is not considered by the Board to be “expertise” sufficient to justify issuing a MSFL.
