Federal government expands options for safe drug disposal

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has published final rules that would allow hospitals, pharmacies and other health care facilities such as long term care centers, to accept unused, unwanted prescription drugs, greatly increasing available options for safe disposal of these medications. The move is seen as a way to keep unused medications, especially controlled substances, out of the hands of those who would misuse or abuse them.

The rules take effect October 9. Read the new rules
