Licensing and Registration

Perfusionists

Average licensing times for full licensure was ~65 days in the first quarter of 2026. Individual processing times may vary.

There are five pathways by which a person may obtain his or her perfusion license. Licenses must be renewed every two years from the date of issuance. To avoid delays, please take the time to read each license application description below to ensure you select the correct application type for you. Applications, documentation supporting licensure, and the application fee are good for one year. Once the application has expired, the applicant must reapply.

Licensed Perfusionist

  • Available to applicants who have graduated from an approved educational program and are currently American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) certified.

  • Available for applicants who are licensed, in good standing, as a perfusionist in another state or United States Territory.

Provisional Licensed Perfusionist

  • Available to applicants who satisfy the educational requirements for perfusion licensure but are not American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) certified.

Converting a Provisional License to a Full License

A provisional licensed perfusionist who receives certification from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) may request that his or her provisional license be converted to a full license. The provisional licensee must submit a written request for the conversion, proof of certification from the ABCP, and pay the conversion fee.

Perfusionist Military Relocation (SCRA) License

  • This application is available to Perfusionists who are military service members or the spouse of a military service member who is relocating to North Carolina on military orders. View the eligibility requirements.
  • License is time-limited to the dates specified on the military orders.
  • The licensee is required to notify the Board when the military orders locating them in North Carolina have ended.
  • Upon completion of the application, NCMB will contact the applicant with information on completing an initial registration for military licenses.
  • Military relocation license holders may request to have their license converted to a full license at no cost as long as that request is made within the first year of licensure.
