Faculty/Special Purpose Applications for Physicians
Please note: The application process will take roughly four months.
The NC Medical Board offers additional license applications to meet the different needs of physicians wishing to practice medicine in North Carolina.
Physician Application for Medical School Faculty License (MSFL)
- Used to enable North Carolina medical schools to benefit from the expertise, specialized knowledge, or unique skills of physicians who are not otherwise eligible for full licensure in North Carolina. You should have a position secured prior to filling out this application. A license will not be issued without verification of an appointment.

Special Purpose License
- Used by physicians who wish to come to NC for a limited time, scope and purpose, such as to demonstrate or learn a new technique, procedure or piece of equipment, or to educate physicians or medical students in an emerging disease or public health issue. You should have a position secured prior to filling out this application. A license will not be issued without verification of activities.
