The North Carolina Medical Board expects licensees who prescribe controlled substances to do so in a safe and appropriate manner that conforms to accepted standards of care. Here, the Board has gathered several resources that can help licensees maintain current knowledge about accepted standards and best practices. Resources may be documents developed by the NCMB, or resources that the Board has found to be credible and useful to licensees who prescribe opioids to their patients.
RESOURCES AND REFERENCE MATERIALS
The Board voted in January 2017 to replace its opioid position statement with the CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain. Prescribers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with this resource and use it to guide, but not dictate, their treatment decisions.
NC Controlled Substances Reporting System: This program is NOT administered by the Medical Board. It is a state-run resource that the NCMB considers to be an important tool. Licensees are encouraged to register for access and use the system. Licensees may register for access to the CSRS via the NCMB website. Login here, then select Training & CSRS from the menu options and scroll down the page to access the CSRS registration process.
