Team-Based Practice becomes effective under the law starting June 30, 2026. Rules are still pending but the Team-Based Practice Registration will be available starting June 30. Physician assistants (PAs) can find the registration by logging into their Licensure Gateway Portal. The link will be available on the main page next to links related to Intent to Practice. PAs must provide their team-based practice address, identify their team-based practice specialty, attest that they meet all the requirements for team-based practice, and acknowledge that they understand any limitations as required by the law. There is no notarization requirement or requirement to upload any supporting documentation.

Engaging in team-based practice is not mandatory and prior to completing the registration, PAs should confirm with their employer that the setting in which they work is a team-based setting. The registration does not nullify any Intent to Practice filed with the NCMB. If a PA is no longer practicing in any settings where supervision is required, the PA will need to update their Intent to Practice form to remove each primary supervising physician after completing the team-based practice registration. To do this, PAs should login to the Licensure Gateway Portal, https://portal.ncmedboard.org/index.aspx, navigate to the Intent to Practice form and remove any sites or supervisors that are no longer applicable. PAs not registered for team-based practice must continue to have a supervising physician and follow all rules pertaining to supervision.
