NC DHHS releases hantavirus guidance

While noting that risk in North Carolina is low, the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NC DHHS) has released clinical guidance in the wake of a cluster of antavirus infections among cruise ship passengers. NC DHHS notes that recent news coverage may provoke questions and concerns in patients and offers the guidance document to help clinicians with providing accurate, fact-based information.

Hantaviruses are a family of viruses that are spread mainly by rodents and can cause severe illness in infected people. Hantavirus infections are rare; the last reported case in North Carolina was in 1995.
