When a physician or PA confronts an alcohol or substance use disorder, it is often a financial crisis, as well as a personal and professional one. Just when the licensee is least able to earn income, assessment fees and treatment costs start mounting. And these bills aren’t small ones: Appropriately addressing alcohol and substance use can easily cost many thousands of dollars.
Since 2008, NCMB has made it possible for its licensees to donate during their annual license renewal to the NC Professionals Health Program Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to help medical professionals pay for needed services and treatment. In 2024, NCMB licensees contributed nearly $250,000 to this fund, which made it possible for NCPHP to issue the largest number of scholarship awards in the fund’s history last year.
NCPHP awarded 90 scholarships totaling nearly $300,000 in 2024. That includes 25 scholarships to help cover the cost of assessment, 40 scholarships for outpatient treatment and 25 scholarships to help defray the expense of residential treatment. In 2023, NCPHP made 74 awards to medical professionals in some stage of diagnosis or treatment totaling about $200,000. Thank you to the licensees whose generosity made these scholarships possible.
Miss your chance to donate? It is not necessary to wait until annual renewal to make a donation.
Visit NCPHP’s website to contribute. Donors may direct their contributions to either the Treatment Scholarship fund or to the Michael W. Wilkerson, MD, Family Assistance Fund. The Wilkerson Family Assistance Fund, named for former NCPHP Medical Director Mike Wilkerson, provides scholarships to families of medical professionals to help with general expenses while their loved one is unable to work due to being in treatment for alcohol or substance use.
