It’s that time again – the Review Panel for the North Carolina Medical Board (“Review Panel”), an independent body that recommends qualified nominees to the Governor for open positions with NCMB, is seeking applications for four physician seats with terms beginning Nov. 1. Find more information about the Review Panel at this website.
Three of the physician seats currently available may be occupied by any eligible physician and the remaining seat must be occupied by either an osteopathic physician or a fully time faculty member at a North Carolina medical school who uses integrative medicine in their clinical practice. The Review Panel will accept applications through Friday, June 26; Select applicants will be invited to interview with the Review Panel in Raleigh on August 1-2.
While NCMB is not involved in the selection of its Board Members, we understand that having highly qualified, engaged professionals on the Board is critical for NCMB to fulfill its mandate to regulate the practice of medicine for the benefit and protection of the people of North Carolina. To that end, we offer the following tips to guide prospective Board Members:
1. Carefully read the eligibility criteria for successful applicants to make sure you qualify. In order to serve, a physician must have been licensed by NCMB for at least five years and intend to remain in active practice in North Carolina for the duration of their service with NCMB. Physician applicants must have an active clinical or teaching practice. Also, a successful applicant must have a clean regulatory history (no public discipline with any regulatory authority) dating back 10 years. Find the complete eligibility requirements on the Review Panel’s website.
2. Learn what Board Members do and consider if this role is right for you. Serving with NCMB requires medical professionals to approach regulatory work with the best interests of the public in mind. Board members frequently make challenging decisions regarding licensure and discipline and must be able to impartially render judgment regarding their peers. NCMB recently created an information page on its website that provides detailed information about Board Members responsibilities and the practical details of service. Find it at www.ncmedboard.org/boardservice.
3. If applying, don’t delay – it can take a little time to assemble all the elements of your application. For example, all applicants must submit three signed letters of recommendation, either from individuals or from organizations such as employers or professional societies. Think about who in your life would recommend you and reach out to your contacts, allowing plenty of time for them to prepare your letter. Ask directly if they can offer you a strong positive reference; if someone is not willing or available to write one, you can get right to work identifying someone else.
4. If selected for an interview, prepare for it as you would for a job interview and be professional and prepared. The Review Panel will expect you to have some knowledge of NCMB and its responsibilities. Your ability to impartially consider and decide allegations of misconduct by your peers may come up – be ready to discuss this. Board Members routinely recuse themselves from any situation that represents an actual or perceived conflict of interest.
5. Be patient. Timing and circumstances can influence who the Review Panel nominates for appointment to NCMB. State law requires the Review Panel to nominate two candidates for each open seat for the Governor’s consideration. Depending on the response to a call for applicants, the Review Panel may pass over multiple qualified individuals. If your initial application does not net you an appointment, don’t be discouraged – apply again. Board terms are staggered so there are typically opportunities to apply every year.
